“Nanette, is one of the best when it comes to dealing with problem horses. Over the years, she’s done a great job with starting horses under saddle for my stable, but her talent for transforming bad behaving horses really sets her apart.”

–Michael S. Ferraro, Sr., Leading Trainer at Fingers Lakes Race Track for 18 years

Halcyon Acres specializes in working with potential racehorses to start them under saddle and problem children who either need to be re-broke or reprogrammed. Our breeding program focuses exclusively on New York Breds. The facility is designed to tackle any issues associated with your potential or current racehorse.

We work with racehorses from inception through our breeding program, to the winner’s circle. Hundreds of yearlings, two-year-olds and older horses, including those already racing but misbehaving, have visited the farm for initial training under saddle, correction of problems or legging up on the extensive hills and our three-quarter-mile and 1¼ mile training ovals. Whether you’re looking to buy a young horse, start your anticipated winner under saddle or have an animal that has behavioral problems, we’re here to help. We also understand the issues and challenges of training for racing, having owned, galloped, doctored, and raced farm-owned stock as well as horses owned by others.

Thoroughbreds can be difficult and frustrating horses to work with – unless they are handled properly early in life, started under saddle in a responsive manner and/or reprogrammed from a bad start through reconditioning that encourages them to strive to excel. Lack of ability can’t be fixed, but attitude and behavior certainly can. If you’re ready to explore how talent can be enhanced and soundness improved through an approach that encourages trust, confidence and an eagerness to learn, please and perform, consider how much fun it might be making your investments more profitableenjoying kinder and saner equine needs.

Ever had a horse flip in the gate? Have you paid to have a horse ‘broke,’ only to find another six months of training at the racetrack is necessary before your horse is race-ready, albeit unruly still? Do your two and three-year-olds tend to incur injuries before they make it to the post parade? Do you have a horse with tons of potential, but an uncooperative temperament that makes training difficult and winning illusive? If you believe early proper guidance under saddle doesn’t impact your horse’s racing career – think again. Maybe it’s time to consider how you might improve your earnings with some simple early, or later corrective, strategies for success.

When you tally the cost of stud fees, vets, mare maintenance, foal care, feeding, etc., your investment is huge before you even begin to consider starting the youngster under saddle. It’s easy to lose sight of the end-game when the costs start mounting, but smart owners and trainers have come to recognize how important initial lessons can be in improving and extending a racehorse’s productive career. You might be amazed with the difference. Halcyon Acres can help.
