Our primary broodmare stock – bred to full Irish Draught (RID) studs - involves carefully selected Thoroughbreds that have been ridden by Halcyon staff, often for over a year’s time, to test soundness, temperament, heart and athletic ability. We select mares that have outstanding conformation, kind dispositions, gutsy attitudes and a penchant for quick learning and impressive performance.
Breeding for temperament and conformation is important in crafting willing and sound companions. Plus, the lessons horses learn early in life, particularly during early handling and when they first begin to carry a rider, will shape their attitude and performance for a lifetime. Why not start off right – with a horse that’s been bred with excellence in mind and a knowledgeable team to help guide their perspectives with early lessons that ensure a long-term attitude that makes riding him a joy and outstanding performance a passion?
Midge (Starlet Anna) is a remarkable little character, initially intended as a lead pony to help train the babies at the farm. She’s tiny compared to her pasture companions, but serves as our farm Alpha. We were very impressed with her toughness, eager training persona, very comfortable riding gates, willing attitude and incredible heart. This gutsy filly won on determination alone against competitors who were far more talented and a whole lot bigger.
She’s bred to Bridon Beale Street (www.lonetreefarm.net) and we expect her 2008 foal to be a kind, stalwart and talented event, dressage or fox hunting companion with the amazing conformation that has been a mainstay in her former foals. Currently considering offers for this anticipated foal from this exquisite proven producing mare. She'll be bred back to Seamus Coille Mor this year, and we’re expect an equally exquisite foal in 2008, boasting awesome conformation and incredible gates. Midge is by Saucy Token out of Starlet Dancer by Thorn Dance.

Sandy (Sandylikethebeach) stands at 16.1+h and is one of the most gentle, amiable and docile Thoroughbreds we’ve encountered. She’s well bred for racing, out of Tomorrow’s Cat by a Storm Bird mare, but was never given a fair chance to excel before she was retired from racing at age four with a limited number of starts. We’re very excited about her first foal, a gorgeous chestnut by Seamus Coille Mor and expect more great things out of her in the future. Her conformation, temperament, intelligence and talent should breed through again to her future Irish Sport Horse foals. Her first colt is a willing pleaser, friendly and cute. She’s confirmed pregnant back to the same stud and we expect an equally good-natured foal in 2007.

Porky (Ample Money Pot) is our all-around farm hand. Whatever job needs to be done, she pays her feed bill many times over by jumping in and performing to task. Whether it’s teaching young racehorses to pony, instructing young colts on the consequences of hormone overload, hauling loads (she drives), carting novice riders or serving as a companion horse for anyone in the pastures or on the trails, she’s on the ready. This gentle mare is smart as a whip (too smart – we’ve learned to reinforce all latches, gates, lids, doors and anything else she may have access to around the farm), yet incredibly kind and the laziest Thoroughbred we’ve ever encountered. We broke her as a yearling and galloped her at the track when she was two. Running her once and watching her get beat by 40 lengths going short, was enough for the owner to decide he didn’t want to be embarrassed running her as a three-year-old and we bought her as an intended lesson horse. She was carrying first-time riders in thirty days and cleaned up at her first show with an up-down rider two months later – performing in both Western and English classes (she was taught to neck reign at the show). The judge pegged her as a Quarter Horse and didn’t believe she was a Thoroughbred until we showed him the tattoo. We didn’t tell him she was three. She’s fifteen now. Her lovely gates, outstanding conformation, intelligence and willing, safe attitude should produce an impressive foal. At 15.1h she was the Alpha before Midge showed up.
